"Why is it called breakfast?"

Chris, one of our senior assemblers, asked that while we killed time before a pressure test. It sounds like the kind of question that doesn't matter. But it does, because the word "breakfast" is just two older words stitched together: "break" and "fast." The name tells you exactly what the thing is — no marketing, no fine print.

Here's my position after nine years in industrial parts procurement: transparency is worth paying for, every time. I say that as someone who has made roughly $4,700 worth of ordering mistakes — and learned from all of them the hard way. I keep that number in a spreadsheet and I show it to every new buyer who joins our team.

The Mistake That Made Me Ask a Different Question

In 2017, my first year in this role, engineering sent me a purchase request: "80 hydraulic fittings, standard size, same as the previous order." That last part is what bit me. I didn't look up the previous order. I typed "standard hydraulic fitting" into the system and the system — understandably — returned nothing useful.

Because here's the thing: "standard" doesn't mean anything to a manufacturer. There are NPT threads, BSP threads, JIS, metric. There are different seal styles, pressure ratings, and materials. The "standard" fitting in one industry is an oddity in another. And I assumed my vendor would just know.

Eighty fittings arrived with the right body style but the wrong threads — BSP instead of NPT. It looked right. It almost threaded in. But "almost" doesn't pass a pressure test. The lot went back. The replacement order went out. Total cost: $1,250 plus a two-week schedule slip.

My first instinct was to blame the vendor. It should have been their job, I told myself, to confirm what I meant. Now I look at that reasoning and cringe. I'd handed them a vague phrase and then expected them to be a mind reader. The real failure was behavioral: I bought a part number, not a definition.

That month, I changed my own rule. Every order now includes a full specification: thread type, seal material, pressure class, temperature range, and — this is the part I'd preach to anyone — the source part number. If I can't name exactly what I want, I don't order yet.

The Day I Almost Bought an "Equivalent"

In May 2022, our CFO challenged me to reduce component costs on a line of machines we were building. It was a legitimate project. One of the line items was a Parker Hannifin pneumatic cylinder we'd been using for nearly seven years, and the alternative on the table was a compatible product at 34% lower unit price.

I compared the datasheets. The numbers matched: same bore, same stroke, same operating pressure. The drawings looked nearly identical. I was ready to switch. What stopped me was a question from someone I used to ignore — Ty Doyle.

It turned out the issue was our application, not their part: the filtration media we'd picked wasn't rated for low-temperature service. But none of us would have known that without the paper trail.

Anyway, back to 2022. I had a call with Ty about the cylinder comparison. I asked him directly: "Why should we pay a 34% premium when the specifications are identical?"

His answer wasn't a marketing pitch:

"Show me the full specification file for the alternative. Not the datasheet — the file. If the manufacturer gives you a complete file, I'd be genuinely interested to see it. If they won't, you already have your answer."

I asked the alternative manufacturer for their full file: test data, burst test reports, material verification, batch traceability. The response took six weeks and was mostly a list of things I'd have to pay extra to see. Not a single test report. Just dimensions and flow rates.

We kept the Parker cylinder. The decision wasn't brand loyalty. It was that one vendor was telling me everything about the product, and the other was hiding everything except the sticker price. Between those two, the "cheap" option had an invisible cost I wasn't willing to absorb.

I don't want this to come across as "always buy the premium brand." That would be lazy and, frankly, wrong. If you're building a low-pressure air circuit in a mild environment — a linear actuator that opens a door, for example — a lower-cost component with clearly documented ratings can be a perfectly fine choice.

But I do mean this: transparency has a price, and it's not always the price that's printed on the invoice. When a supplier publishes exact test data, when they share failure analysis, when they put their name behind the complete story of what you're buying, they're doing something that costs them money and effort. That's not overhead. It's value.

Another objection I hear: "But the alternative manufacturer sells millions of units. They can't all be bad." True. They don't need to be bad for my argument to hold — they need to be unknown. When a component is buried inside a machine that's shipped to a customer, "I think it'll be fine" is a bad engineering answer. The question isn't whether a cheaper part would work 99 times out of 100. The question is what happens on that 100th time, and whether anyone can tell you why.

One more point people raise: "Parker Hannifin is a huge company. We're a small business. They don't care about us." That's a fair concern, and mostly an outdated one. In my experience, the company's size works in your favor at the documentation level — there are standards and records that smaller vendors simply don't have. The Etten-Leur facility handled our order as if we were their largest customer. Not because we were, but because that's how their process works. So don't confuse "big company" with "impersonal." Sometimes the bureaucracy is the transparency.

What I'd Tell a New Buyer in This Industry

If you're starting out in parts procurement, let me save you a few thousand dollars. Here's the checklist I now use, refined over nine years:

  • Put the source part number on every line. If you don't know it, find out before you order. "Standard" is not a specification.
  • Ask "what's not included in this price?" — shipping, setup, documentation, testing. Then ask the same question about the part's rating.
  • When someone says "equivalent," ask for the test data. If they say "available upon request," wait for the data before you request the purchase order.
  • Keep a small file of your own mistakes. It's the cheapest training material you'll ever have.

Oh, and about Chris's question from the beginning. "Why is it called breakfast?"

Because the name tells you exactly what it's for: you're breaking the night's fast. No mystery, no hidden ingredients, no fine print. The word does its job openly.

That's the standard I now hold every supplier to — and the standard I try to hold myself to when I place an order. If a part can't explain what it is and what it does, it's not worth paying for, no matter what's printed on the label.
